My Story

I Learned the Hard Way, So You Don't Have To.

In school I spent more time looking out the window than at the teacher. Sitting at a desk never felt like the life I wanted. With barely passing grades and no financial backing, college simply was not an option. What I did have was a love for the outdoors, a willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic.

At 19 I quit my dead end job and started at the bottom as a swamper with zero experience. By 21 I saw my first $100k year. Blasting did not just change my life financially, it gave me purpose, structure, and direction.

Everywhere I went, I was the youngest guy on the jobsite, often by 10+ years. That made me wonder why more young people were not building a future in this incredible trade. That question is what inspired me to create Blasting World.

Questions Before You Start

Q1 Do I need certifications or experience to start?

Zero previous blasting experience is required to get hired for an entry level position on most blast crews. Previous blue collar experience is highly recommended, as blasting is a physically and mentally demanding line of work that mostly takes place outdoors.

Q2 How much do blasters make?

Certified blasters can typically expect to make $90k to $120k yearly. Lead blaster and supervisor positions can earn anywhere from $110k to $150k yearly. Niche work like avalanche control, demolition, and close proximity blasting has higher earning potential, and remote or camp work can significantly increase wages if you are willing to work out of town.

Q3 Is blasting a dangerous job?

The short answer is yes. Blasting, like most trades, has the potential to be extremely dangerous, but not in the way you would think. Handled properly, the explosives themselves are generally very safe. Most injuries in the industry come from unsafe work practices around highwalls, heavy equipment, toxic dust, and tripping hazards. Your best line of defense is strong situational awareness and good PPE.
